CHINESE – (Ages 6-11)

10:15am – 11:15am

Mrs. Gezi Cox   bluelake061@yahoo.com

你好!Ni Hao!  Hello!  Are you thinking of taking a foreign language? Please consider taking Mandarin Chinese as one of the most spoken languages in the world. Mandarin is taught in many schools in the United States, which has increased in recent years faster than other second languages. Because the Chinese economy is one of the fastest growing in the world, the economic relationship between China and the USA has become very strong. Chinese language will open doors into whatever future you plan for yourself!

Build your basic Chinese language knowledge now, so when you continue learning Chinese at college, it will be much easier. Now is the time! Get ready for an exciting year, where we will immerse ourselves in Chinese!  By next May, you will be able to describe your day, discuss your favorite foods, express your feelings, and talk about your family, all with confidence, in Chinese!  We will also work on writing Chinese characters.  Starting with stroke order, you will develop a solid foundation for writing, and over the course of the school year, will be able to write around one hundred characters.

Don’t make the mistake of thinking that this class is only about the language.  Chinese culture is rich and vibrant, and you will find yourself immersed in its beauty.  You will experience the holidays and festivals (including Chinese New Year and the Moon Festival), the costumes, its history, art and poetry, as well as its diverse geography.

By the time our “journey” ends next May, you will feel as comfortable with China, its language and its traditions, as if you had really travelled there.   谢谢!

ROBOTICS/ STEM - (Ages 9-11)

9:15am - 10:15am, 11:15am-12:15pm

Mr. Phillip Hammerstrom     phillip.hammerstrom@gmail.com

In this class, students will be learning about science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) through project-based learning using the Edison® robot and hands on STEM activities. With this active and engaged style of learning, children will gain a deeper knowledge of the subjects they're studying. Koinonia will provide each student a robot of their own to use in class during the school year.

In the Robotics section, the lessons begin with learning basic programming icons, such as forward, backward, and right and left turns. After we master the basics, we will learn how to write more complex programs and applying this knowledge by participating in both individual and team challenges, such as line tracking and sumo wrestling.

In the STEM section, we will be doing experiments and activities such as making marble roller coasters and marshmallow catapults and having pop can races. With these activities, students will work together in groups and use problem solving skills to complete the given task. They are fun, engaging and facilitate group work and problem solving. We will also learn how to document our activities by logging our work into an Engineering notebook that will go home with them at the end of the year.

SCIENCE (year 4) – (Ages 9-11)

1:45pm - 2:45pm

Mrs. Tena Bartholomew  rodtena.bar@gmail.com

This year the mysteries of electricity will be revealed! Our year will be divided into four sections: static electricity, circuits, electromagnetism, and the history of electricity. Each section will include hands on activities and multiple resources to help your student best retain the information learned.

Starting the year with static electricity, students will discover how like charges repel while unlike charges attract. Students will learn that static electricity occurs when electrons are transferred giving a positive or negative charge. Interactive activities will have students amazed as thread dances like a cobra, on salt as it rains up and down and up and down and as paper clips wiggle follow the movement of plastic wrap.

Continuing the year, the circuits section allows students to build parallel circuits, dimmer switches, and circuit breakers. Students learn about the electric current and how it flows. In one learning activity, students will create a circuit using a battery, paper clip and light bulb. Students be startled by how hot the paper clip gets when the bulb is in correctly placed in the circuit. Instead of making light energy, this makes heat energy!

Electromagnetism will introduce students to the relationship between electricity and magnetism. Fun learning activities include building a galvanometer, a model electric motor, and more.

Finally, students are introduced to people and events in the history of electricity. There will be some read at home, an electricity timeline, and an interview with someone older to provide perspective on how the use of electricity has changed.

As in all years, lab reports will be written with each activity to keep track of all experimentation. While homework is not a weekly requirement, students will be writing their conclusions to the lab at home.
